Saturday, April 28th • 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Animal Resource Center • Oklahoma City, OK
Join us at the inaugural Black & White FurBall, an adoption event to bring awareness to the plight of hard-to-place black dogs and cats (and all black and white variations as well!). This exciting event is planned for Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Animal Resource Center, located at 7949 S. I-35 Service Road in Oklahoma City, OK. Area rescues will have adoptable dogs and cats on hand with a wide variety of vendors selling dog- and cat-related merchandise, as well as a petting zoo, music, and more!
The brainchild of Linda Phipps, animal advocate and founder of SafHaven Animal Rescue Society, this brand new event is designed to promote adoptions, while dispelling some of the stereotypes associated with black dogs and cats. According to Phipps, “I network with a lot of rescuers and frequently it seemed black dogs came up needing rescue more often than others. To me, it seemed there was a disproportionate number of black animals in dire situations and I came to realize this is a significant problem. The media has tagged it ‘Black Dog Syndrome.’ Even though it’s so named, black cats also suffer from the same problem, maybe even more so than dogs due to the negative connotations associated with black cats. While there isn’t anecdotal evidence backing this up, the phenomenon is widespread according to rescues and shelters across the country.
“So often, black dogs fade into the background at shelters; they’re harder to photograph, and people are naturally drawn to the lighter, more colorful dogs. Black cats have always been associated with negative superstitions such as black cats and witches,” continued Phipps. “I wanted to create an event dispelling the negativity, instead promoting the beauty of black dogs and cats, so the Black & White FurBall was born. We’ve had wonderful groups step forward, showing support and sponsorship for the FurBall and we’re hoping to see a great number of adoptions, perhaps even, making this an annual event for rescue groups in Oklahoma City.”
